During Wednesday’s Lionsgate presentation at CinemaCon, Henry Cavill came out to talk about his two Guy Ritchie projects, and he dropped a little knowledge in regards to director Chad Stahleski’s Highlander reboot. Out of all of the information that was given to us today, this was probably the most intriguing.

The original Highlander was released in theaters in 1986 starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. As a kid I freaking loved this movie, it was action packed and scary.

It left a lifelong impression and it is one of my core movie memories. To hear Henry Cavill speak on the subject was truly inspiring. He made me feel like he was as invested in making this franchise great. Here are a few things that he said at the presentation.

“I’m a lover of the original movies, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was reading the script for the first time I wasn’t quite too sure where they were going to go with it.”

In the end, he decided to sign on when he realized that this was going to be a bigger movie than the original, saying:

“But me oh my, we are going much deeper into the characters.”

Then he capped off his desire to bring excitement to the crowd by saying:

“If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

I loved Cavill as Geralt and I am super excited to see him as Connor MacLeod. I feel like this is what this franchise needed to come back with a vengeance. This is totally the time to come out with a wide range sweeping series of films that gives the audience, old and new fans, something to sink their teeth into.

Stahelski previously said the reboot is like John Wick with swords, and revealed that it was being developed as a trilogy. He explained that they are taking the best story elements from across the franchise and implementing it all into one story that will be spread out across a trilogy of films.

He said: “I think the TV series hit on a lot of great stuff wasn’t in the feature, between the watchers and all the different types of immortals. How do we get this into a feature mode before we dribble it into the TV world? Well, let’s restructure it in parts, let’s look at it like it was a TV show, let’s look at it like it was a high-end trilogy.”

He continued: “How to we tell the story of The Gathering, The Quickenings, The Immortals and how do we really build this world out even more so than the original project? That’s what we’re restructuring right now. It’s taking all the good stuff that we had before I was involved in the project from the script; redeveloping the script to give us really good chapters one, two and three; and expanding the world.”

He also talked about his vision for the film, saying: “The vision we’re trying to get across and what we’re trying to develop, I equate very close to Star Wars. The first one is a very satisfying ending but it does leave the door open and that’s kind of how I see this. I would really like to expand it over three.”

He added: “I see The Gathering happening over three. It’s tricky, don’t get me wrong, that’s why we’re still developing it. We want to be able to tell three complete stories that all kind of fit. I think the Star Wars trilogy, at least up to The Empire Strikes Back, is a good example of how we want to process it.”

What do you think about this movie?
